3-phase separation

Centrifuges have been involved in the meat and rendering business for many years. From purification of fats in edible and inedible processes to recovering low concentrations of FOG (fats, oils and greases) from waste water streams centrifuges play an important role.

Taking care of our environment has become a lead component of the success of operations and a significant component in a company’s bottom line has been the reduction in hauling and waste water treatment costs while recovering FOG ( fats, oils and greases) that provide an additional revenue stream.

Many manufacturers have attempted to recover the residual fats and greases in the wastewater streams using centrifuges though with little luck. FOG in rendering wastewater is normally bound with the solid components in the waste stream. The only way to capture this FOG would be through heat and mechanical separation.

Traditionally the waste streams comprising water, oil and solids would pass through a two phase decanter centrifuge followed by a high speed disc stack centrifuge. With heating of the feed stream, the FOG would liquefy and free from the solid particles. Once liquefied, the FOG would release from the solid particles then join and flow with the water component of the waste stream. In a two phase decanter, the solids would be discharged separately on one end of the machine for further process and the water and FOG would to flow together and discharge from the machine. The combined water and FOG would then be heated again and processed through a vertical high speed disc centrifuge for separation of the water and FOG.

Many attempts were made by manufacturers for a one step 3-phase separation in a decanter centrifuge though with little success due to poor machine design and unreliable mechanical operations.

Centrisys Corporation knew the failure rate of the other manufacturers and their attempts to find a solution for this common problem within the meat and rendering industry. Centrisys had the proven solution from their experience in the 3-phase separation in the Petroleum industry. Here again, many manufacturers of centrifuges had attempted to find success though with continuous failure. Centrisys had the largest amount of 3-phase machines installed for recovering valuable resources with a strong focus in improving the environment throughout the world.

Following rigorous side by side testing with Centrisys and other brands, it was confirmed that the Centrisys 3-phase decanter centrifuge outperformed any other piece of equipment on the market. Installations have made where the Centrisys machines were put in to replace other unsuccessful centrifuge brands that only attempted to meet the performance and reliability of that offered by Centrisys.

Centrisys’ technology and leadership was brought into the meat, poultry and rendering industry and has been the only company to offer a successful 3-phase decanter centrifuge that allows high efficiency 3-phase separation with high throughputs and maximized equipment run time.
